Other Notable Projects
While the Midtown Grid and the bustling R and K Street corridors capture much of the attention in Sacramento’s urban core development, several other notable projects have also been pivotal in transforming the city’s landscape. These areas may not always be in the spotlight, but they play a crucial role in broadening the city’s appeal and creating diverse, vibrant neighborhoods. From adaptive reuse of historic buildings to innovative mixed-use developments, these projects have introduced new housing options, enhanced walkability, and brought in a mix of unique retail and dining destinations. Collectively, these developments contribute to a thriving urban market, attracting residents, visitors, and businesses alike, while adding layers of character and economic vitality to the Sacramento region.
Former Blighted Clarion Hotel Sold for Mixed-Use Development
The story of 1517 H Street began in 1958 with the Mansion Inn, a stylish two-story hotel developed by E.A. Corum & Son Builders and designed by Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture. Named for its proximity to the Governor’s Mansion, the Inn featured garden courtyards, a pool, a restaurant, and a cocktail lounge, quickly becoming a popular spot for politicians, musicians, and locals. Over the years, the Mansion Inn expanded three times, remaining a Sacramento landmark well into the 1980s.
In the 1980s, the property was rebranded as part of the Clarion Hotel chain, undergoing renovations that removed much of its original mid-century character. As newer hotels closer to the Capitol and Convention Center—like the Hyatt, Sheraton, Marriott, and Citizen—emerged, the Clarion lost prominence and ultimately closed. Left fully furnished, the abandoned building soon became a refuge for those experiencing homelessness and an unwelcome habitat for rodents and bats.
With the structure beyond repair, Turton identified SKK Development and Grupe as ideal partners to redevelop the property. Today, 1517 H Street is home to The Mansion, a five-story, 186-unit luxury apartment building with over 10,000 SF of retail space, breathing new life into this historic site and continuing its legacy in Sacramento’s urban core.
