A Sacramento coffee shop that’s grown a following at its original 1111 H St. location is expanding to Curtis Park.

Cafe Immortal plans to open a location at 2901 30th St., in a space previously home to a Naked Coffee location.

Immortal opened its first location in fall of 2023, billing itself as “a neighborhood vegan-esque cafe for everybody.” The approximately 1,000-square-foot cafe includes a large outdoor patio.

In an Instagram post last week, Immortal confirmed its additional location, saying, “The rumors are true, we’re opening a second spot! You’ll find us in Curtis Park with some of our current menu offerings and a helluva lot more wine, evening events and brunch! See y’all early next year.”

In an interview with the Business Journal, Immortal co-owner Eric Cockrell cited the need for expanded food preparation and a growing customer base as reasons for expansion.

“We knew sooner or later we needed to be pursuing a second location to move the food production to,” he said. “We’re also pretty limited on what we can do, coffee-wise, just because we’ve maxed out the power, the amperage, of our current space.”

The H Street storefront, previously occupied by Naked Lounge, is within the Retro Lodge complex.

The Retro Lodge project was an adaptive reuse of a former hotel into office space. The building’s current owners are in the process of converting the non-retail space back into a hotel. Cockrell and his business partners saw the potential additional strain that would put on Immortal.

“With that extra 100-plus people on site at all times with staff and guests, it’s a little stressful thinking about how we’d be able to manage that,” he said.

Cockrell said he and his wife Jessica Weddle-Cockrell, another of Immortal’s co-owners, live in Curtis Park and have had their eyes on the new spot for a while.

“When that remodel of that building happened two or three years ago, we were like ‘oh man, this would be the ideal spot for us.’ It’s in a neighborhood that would be kind of underserved for what we want to offer.”

When the Curtis Park location became available after Naked Coffee’s closure, Immortal took over the lease. Cockrell said the new location will have expanded food and wine offerings.

“In the evenings, we’d really love to be able to have more of a wine and small plates, bottle shop, kind of presence,” he said.

Cockrell says he anticipates opening the Curtis Park location in late spring, following some permitting and light construction.
