For those wanting a more dynamic urban center — or a high-scale grocer — it’s clear that Whole Foods Market’s decision to walk away from a midtown mixed-use project is a bummer.
It’s not apparent yet, and won’t be for a while, what happens next with the venture. Pappas Investments planned to build the project on what’s now an aging parking garage between 20th and 21st streets on L Street, with a new garage a block away. The project also would have had several dozen apartments, providing another shot in the arm for boosting population in and near Sacramento’s downtown.
