Bento Box adds to Row of Sushi

The newest location of Bento Box restaurants opened today in downtown Sacramento.

It is the third location of Bento Box, owned an operated by Jonathan Kim.

The new store is at the ground floor of the office building at 1600 K St.

And, yes, this is the place that has had “opening soon” signs posted outside since before Thanksgiving.

The space the restaurant occupies had formerly been an open two-story atrium with a sculpture of a bucking bull.

To bring the former outdoor space up to code, all the utilities and services had to be trenched into the 5,600-square-foot space, and a new slab floor was poured, said Daniel Mueller of Turton Commercial Real Estate. He represented Kim.

A remodel of the outside of the building enclosed the atrium with glass, metal and wood trim.

Bento Box has locations at 65th St. and Folsom Boulevard in East Sacramento and in Loehmann’s Plaza. It serves Japanese and Korean cuisine.

The downtown location will have the same menu as the other two — but it will also have a full liquor license, a to-go window on the K Street side of the building and some Chinese dishes, Mueller said.

The restaurant will be across the street and a half-block away from both Sapporo Grill and Mikuni Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar, which are also large Japanese cuisine restaurants.

In May, we first wrote about the downtown Bento Box on 16th Street becoming an addition to Sacramento’s Japanese cuisine restaurant row.

Sacramento’s sushi row starts at Miso Japanese Cuisine, which is near the corner of 16th and Broadway. Just a few blocks away from Miso is Kamon Japanese Restaurant in a center at 16th and V streets. There’s a gap of a few blocks before you get to Shabu Japanese Fondue, which is at the corner of 16h and R streets. Nishiki Sushi is just off the corner of 16th and P streets in the Fremont Building. Sapporo Grill is in the Firestone building at 16th and L streets. Then a few blocks away in the Loftworks project at 16th and J streets is the downtown location of Mikuni Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar. Though Mikuni has a J Street address, the entrance is on 16th Street.

And if you’re willing to stroll a block or two off 16th Street, there is Zen Sushi at the corner of 15th and I streets, Ramen House Ryu Jin at 1831 S St., Coyote Tap House at 14th and H streets and Ju Hachi Japanese Cuisine by Taka at 18th and S streets.
