Another empty building on the R Street corridor in Sacramento is getting a new tenant that’s expected to bring more activity to a trendy area.

Language school Casa de Español Center for Language and Culture will occupy 4,000 square feet in a former state office at 1101 R St. But classes won’t be the only event happening there.

Owner Maria Harrington said the expanded space — the school is in 1,200 square feet on J Street in midtown Sacramento now — was a key attraction.

“Right now, we’re having to put students on a wait list,” she said. Since the school opened with 25 students in September 2011, enrollment now is at 350. As well, tutoring sessions have to be in an outdoor plaza with no cover, not ideal on especially cold or hot days.

But the neighborhood was a key factor in choosing the new site as well. The school will now expand to include a cultural center, including art displays.

Harrington said with the Warehouse Artist Lofts opening across R, the block will be a hub for Second Saturday art events. “We’re already putting together an art exhibit for when that really gets going in May,” she said.

The school will also host events for Floricanto, a multicultural festival of arts and food found in Spain and Latin American countries. And the space also has outdoor areas for hosting other community events.

Casa de Español will remodel most of the interior at their new home, trying to give a gallery area especially a strong Latino feel, she said. The goal is to occupy the new building and start giving classes by March.

Jon Lang of Turton Commercial Real Estate worked on the lease on behalf of the school, while Aaron Marchand of Turton worked on behalf of the landlord.
