A taproom that has operated at Midtown’s Ice Blocks since the development’s inception could be closing, with its lease expiring and the space being put on the market for lease.

Device Brewing Company, which opened its initial brewery location on 14th Avenue in Sacramento in 2013, expanded its operation to include a taproom at the Ice Blocks development in 2018. The operators initially filled an approximately 1,900-square-foot space at 1610 R St., Suite 145, before expanding into an adjacent vacant space in 2022, which provided more room for seating and additional retail and merchandising opportunities.

The approximately 2,885-square-foot space, which includes a large outdoor patio, was recently put on the market for lease by Turton Commercial Real Estate, with the listing stating the space is the last available retail opportunity in the development’s Ice Shops wing. Scott Kingston, listing broker with Turton, said the space will be available for lease starting in January 2025. The space is being marketed at $4 per square foot a month plus triple net costs, which include taxes, maintenance and insurance.

Michael Heller of Heller Pacific, managing general partner of Ice Blocks, said Device Brewing’s lease for the space is coming to an end.

“Device has been at The Ice Blocks since inception and its been a great run,” Heller said in an email. “Nothing but appreciation to the owners Ken and Melissa who have moved out of state. There will be many exciting options for this space and I am really excited to see what’s next.”

Device Brewing’s founders, husband-and-wife team Ken and Melissa Anthony, appear to have moved to Texas within the last year, according to their LinkedIn profiles. They previously lived in Sacramento’s Pocket neighborhood, where they opened a Device Brewing taproom and kitchen in February 2020, which is still operating. The Anthonys did not respond to requests for comment.

The brewery has not made a statement regarding any change of plans for its locations on its website or social media accounts. Jason Jokerst, a representative of Device Brewing, told the Business Journal that the brewery has “a lot of changes coming up” but could not provide an official statement about its plans for the Ice Blocks location as of Tuesday.

In October, local wine bar Nico Wine announced it would be closing its location in the development’s Ice House wing, with a farewell party expected to occur sometime this month. Heller said his team is planning to move its Ice House leasing office into the Nico Wine space once it opens up.

Ice Blocks is a multiuse development that features 70,000 square feet of retail space, 145 apartments, and 95,000 square feet of office space split among three wings ⏤ the Ice Shops, Ice House and Ice Shed ⏤ spanning three city blocks along the R Street Corridor.
