A Downtown Sacramento building that has been home to various businesses over the last decade has a new use in the works, which is being spearheaded by a local catering company.
The 4,100-square-foot building at 1015 Ninth St. has been vacant since August 2022, when Odd Cookie Bakery Cafe & Bar — which featured a bakery, restaurant and bar — closed its doors. In years prior to that, the space was occupied by food and beverage concepts such as Bar Rouse and Blackbird.
Husband-and-wife Joseph and Elizabeth Croteau recently signed a lease for the building, where they are planning to open a private event space called Chariot — a nod to the architectural horses engraved on the building and “a vessel to hold people and events,” the operators said. The operators also own Sacramento Catering Collective, a chef-owned catering company started in 2019 that services weddings and special events throughout Northern California.
Elizabeth Croteau said the catering business has built a strong following and reached a point where it needed its own space to host private events.
“Right now, we are working off-site in local venues and out of the city center where we’ve been traveling to and setting up a pop-up kitchen, but to be able to host on-site will bring more life to this area of the city that we see growing,” she said. “We want to really use our knowledge of events to host here and have wonderful on-site catering.”
The two-story building, which incudes an approximately 600-square-foot mezzanine area, features a kitchen, multiple bars and spaces where different types of events and activations can be held. Croteau said the space will be able to accommodate private events such as wedding rehearsals, small weddings, corporate luncheons and dinners and holiday events.
Work is underway to revamp the space. Chariot is expected to begin operating in early December. Croteau said they have already received inquiries from clients interested in hosting an event in the space, but nothing has been booked yet.
Brokers Kimio Bazett and Scott Kingston of Turton Commercial Real Estate brokered the recent lease agreement on behalf of the building’s landlord. The space is located in Downtown Sacramento just blocks from the Downtown Commons center and the State Capitol building.
